Vampire Friday o3.2o.15

Welcome to Vampire Friday! technically, its Saturday, but this is my first post.

So instead of sharing in longer chunks of what I have been sharing for Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, I decided to go all the way back to the beginning of 2012 and share my first BloodLust Series WIP book that I started to write. I didn't get very far with it, before the book I am writing now took over, which is entitled BloodLust: Armani. For those who have been following me, Armani is technically the second book. I'm still in debate as to whether or not I'm going to write the first. I have been feeling the urge to write more in both stories. :)

So this excerpt starts at the very beginning...
Jake

Night takes over the city as Jake Masterson awakens. He verifies with the clock that it really is night and not the heavily draped windows playing a joke on him. He reaches for his shirt and jeans on the dark red carpet, putting them on quickly. He makes his way to the kitchen and to the refrigerator; he rearranges some containers of food and some fruits and vegetables from the front, so he can reach the back. He pulls out a crystal container and gets a wine glass, pouring himself a drink of what looks like red wine. After warming it up in the microwave, he gently swirls the liquid in the glass and then takes a sip, making a disgusted face - he still has a hard time choking it down even after all these years. Jake sat at his computer desk typing his latest concert review for the magazine, trying very hard to ignore Vaughn, who was blowing up his phone with text messages, desperately trying to get Jake out for the night. Vaughn’s latest was a quickly shot video; Vaughn kissing a pretty young woman and pulling away, revealing his fangs before sinking them into the woman’s neck, making sure to let some of her blood spill down her shoulder. Jake threw down his phone in annoyance, and tried to type again. His phone vibrated once more, showing a message with photos “Lots of pretty ladies out tonight”. Jake can’t help but to scroll through the photos, one catching his eye; a young woman being served a drink by a beautiful female bartender. He pockets his phone and grabs his half empty wine glass; dumping the already cold blood into the sink.

Jake swiftly strolled through the crowded nightclub; his blood telling him where to find Vaughn. Jake found him sitting in a booth with a pretty human woman on each side of him, Vaughn’s face lighting up when he saw Jake. Jake noticed the women dressed more like escorts than club goers, but he wasn't going to bother to ask where Vaughn found these two.
“I knew the photos and video would get you out here,” he said, “you have to live a little now that you’re back in Manhattan with me.”
“Yeah, well, it won’t be all the time, like it used to be.”
“Cindy and Jenna, this is Jake, we have a long history together,” Vaughn smiled.
Both Cindy and Jenna, rushed over to Jake's side to say hello. They both pulled their hair away from their necks to show Jake that they were willing and waiting. Feeling uncomfortable, Jake awkwardly said hello back. Vaughn knew Jake gave up drinking live human blood a while ago, but tempting Jake always had its fun.
Jake casually suggested that he and Vaughn go get drinks. The ladies agreed, excusing themselves to use the restroom.
"You know I don't drink live human blood." Jake said.
"Tempting you was always my favorite game." Vaughn replied, smiling, "Besides, how long can you really live on the cold bagged stuff?
Vaughn watched as Jake scanned the bar; the couple in front of them moving, so Jake had a clearer view. Jake finally sees the bartender from the photo and she is more beautiful to him in person.

"And here you are, curious in a human. She was in the photo I took earlier,” Vaughn said with a huge grin, “She’s the reason you came out tonight.”

She was in the middle of making a drink when she looked up and saw Jake watching her. She smiled and almost dropped the bottle of Jack Daniels Whiskey she was flipping into the air; the scare of almost not catching it snapped her out of her trance and back on the drink she was preparing. Jake studied her...

  1. I can see it's an earlier work, it doesn't flow as well as Armani.
I don't know if it's the length but I think Jake is more interesting as a character to read. Either if he stay nice or turn bad there are tons of possibilities to him. I want to kick Vaughn for teasing him.

    1. I realized after I posted this blog post that I had a bit better version of this excerpt. A bit longer, but I could split it up, but even more descriptive and more with Vaughn not respecting Jake's decision to stay off the grid, in vampire speak. :)

  2. Also I just realised. You have this skipping skills I really have trouble with. It seems that I can't manage to get a character for one place to the other without going through the entire process of going there, which means my characters walk a lot. Do you have a particular technique for skipping?

    1. Skipping is just something I do. I've always written stories since I was a kid. But didn't get really serious about it until college. Thats where I started actually caring about mechanics of writing and such, but thats also where I started focusing on Screenwriting. It wan't until after I took all these graduate screenwriting classes that I started writing novels. So i think its my screenwriting background that engrained having "scenes" with a start and stopping point. As I write Armani and this book, I see everything in scenes.

I'm going to make this into a blog post. I can teach a few elements of screenwriting that i carry over to novel writing. And now that i wrote this comment, I am also going to write a blog post about why I didn't take writing seriously in high school, because I did want to.

Thanks for the blog post ideas :)
